Alphas of Atlanta to Be Recognized by Clayton County While Preparing for 11th Annual Alpha Derby Weekend

The Alphas of Atlanta, Inc. are entering a significant stretch this spring, marked by both civic recognition and one of Atlanta’s most anticipated cultural fundraising weekends.

On April 21, 2026, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners will formally recognize the organization during its scheduled board meeting. The proclamation acknowledges the group’s continued service and outreach across Metro Atlanta, particularly its investment in youth-focused programming and community development.

The presentation will take place at 6:00 PM at Clayton County Board of Commissioners Office. The recognition will be led by DeMont Davis, alongside his assistant, Denise Harrod. The meeting will also be broadcast via Clayton County Access Television, expanding visibility for the moment and the work behind it.

This acknowledgment reflects years of consistent programming led by the Alphas of Atlanta, particularly through their grant-making initiatives and partnerships with nonprofits serving students across elementary, middle, and high school levels. Their work has centered on mentorship, college exposure, and enrichment opportunities designed to create access and long-term impact.

That impact is closely tied to their flagship initiative, AlphaDerbyWeekend, which returns for its 11th edition from April 30 through May 3, 2026.

Presented by Woodford Reserve, the Kentucky Derby-inspired weekend has grown into a destination event that blends culture, entertainment, and philanthropy. Since its inception, the initiative has raised more than $300,000 to support nonprofit organizations across Metro Atlanta, including those serving communities in Clayton County.

Attendance has steadily increased over the years, with more than 4,000 attendees recorded in 2023. Organizers expect another strong showing this year, with participants traveling in from across the country. Roughly one-third of attendees typically come from outside the state of Georgia, positioning the event as both a local staple and a national draw.

The weekend opens on Friday, May 1, with a golf tournament at Chapel Hills Golf Club, followed by a series of kickoff activities that include community health initiatives, networking opportunities, and a concert experience rooted in classic hip-hop and R&B culture.

This year’s headliner is Jon B, who will perform as part of the newly introduced Cutwater Concert Series. The concert will take place at Guardian Works, continuing a tradition of high-profile performances that have defined past editions of the weekend.

Previous performers have included artists such as Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Bobby V, and Cupid, alongside curated tributes to Atlanta’s hip-hop legacy featuring names like Young Dro and Lil Scrappy.

On Saturday, May 2, the focus shifts to the signature Derby Day experience, also held at Guardian Works. The event centers around the live viewing of the Kentucky Derby, complemented by fashion moments, including the traditional hat competition, and appearances from notable figures. In previous years, Andre Dickens has attended, reinforcing the event’s position at the intersection of civic presence and cultural relevance.

The weekend concludes on Sunday, May 3, with a closing brunch at Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead. The brunch has become a consistent highlight, offering a more intimate setting to close out a weekend built on both celebration and purpose.

While the scale and energy of Alpha Derby Weekend continue to grow, its core mission remains direct. Proceeds from the weekend support the Alphas of Atlanta grant program, which provides funding and resources to nonprofits working in education, mentorship, and youth development. The model is straightforward: leverage culture and community engagement to create tangible support for organizations doing on-the-ground work.

The upcoming proclamation from Clayton County reflects that impact at a government level. It signals recognition not just of an event, but of a sustained effort to invest in communities through structured programming and strategic partnerships.

For those interested in attending or learning more, event details, ticketing, and sponsorship opportunities are available through the organization’s official platforms. The Alphas of Atlanta also welcome media coverage, both during the April 21 proclamation and throughout the Alpha Derby Weekend events.

This moment places the organization in a clear position: recognized locally for its service, while continuing to build one of the more consistent nonprofit-driven cultural events in the region.
